revolvingstage said: Hello there. I'm sending you a quick question regarding hedgehog behavior. My gf and I have one for well over a year now, and lately, she has been hissing at any sign of human contact, please see my post for details. If you have any insight or maybe things that we could try, we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your time.

In your original post you said that you were gone for two weeks, but have been gone before with no issue. I would bet that your hedgehog decided to hold a grudge this time, or became used to not having contact and routine with you. Having its nightly routine with you broken can also cause a lot of grumpiness. You going on a trip may have had no effect in the past, but it does now. That’s just how it is sometimes. Some nights when I am not taken out for bonding I am fine with it and behave normally the next night, but other times I am VERY angry and need time just from one night apart to re-bond and get back into routine. You probably just need time to re-bond, and get your hedgie used to its routine with you again.

Just wanted to let you know that we did get a chance to do a little bit of bonding with her last night when we clipped her nails and gave her some treats, she was totally fine, so we are just going to try and bond with her again and see if things are looking up in the next week or so.

Thanks again for your help!

Hmm, well I’ve had Casper for a year now too, since I got him last September. It’s very important to pick Ping up and handle him as often as you can, and try to do it with bare hands so they get your scent. When I do use a towel, I use the same one every time so he’s used to it. When you first reach into the cage and wake them, they will hiss because they don’t know what’s going on. Keep in mind that hedgehogs are nocturnal, so they’re much more active at night. How often to you bring him out of his cage to cuddle/play? Casper is hissing at first too but he opens up after a minute or two. Oh, and I keep him in my bathroom, so he hears my voice constantly and isn’t isolated. Please answer so I can get more details

I’m not an expert by any means but from my personal experiences it could be something very simple. Such as dry skin. If their skin is super dry it’s possible it’s making them grouchy. I use a special oil I got from my breeder to keep Watson’s skin hydrated. It’s possible it could be something more serious. I would take your hedgie to a vet to get him/her checked out just to be safe!!!
